Glocal Ventures focuses its overseas efforts on serving the people of Vietnam. Whenever possible, volunteers are encouraged to use their vocations, skills, and passions to make a difference in Vietnam. Volunteers serve alongside a community to help people work together in interdependency, taking charge of their situations and moving towards a more empowered and satisfying life as individuals and community.

Our strategy for mobilizing volunteers is based on careful needs-assessment in the host country and at the level of the beneficiary. GVI also promotes domain engagement (see diagram), where volunteers are encouraged to use their vocations to make an impact on the corresponding domain in Vietnam.

Global warming is the big issue of modern times. Climate change affects us all, because we all need to live on this planet and protect its future.

Our mission is to act fast. In Carbonica we believe that the only way to combat global warming is by combining a low-carbon economy with a programme of managed forestry on an unprecedented scale. We believe that by restoring vast areas of rainforest it is possible to recapture carbon from the atmosphere at a significant rate.

Only if our effort is on a sufficiently large scale, can we make a difference and reverse global warming, by recapturing the billions of tonnes of carbon that are already in the atmosphere. Our mission is to plant trees and fund multi-story cropping and programmes of tropical forest restoration and preservation on as large a scale as possible.

Based out of Montreal, our featured organization this week deals with the water crisis. Although most of us turn a blind eye to the crisis, it does not by any means mean that we are not effected by it. yet almost a billion people do not have access to safe drinking water and 2.5 billion live in areas without sanitation. Worldwide solidarity is the best defense against the monopolization of this invaluable resource.

The interdependence of nature and humans means water issues are everyone’s issue. Without water, there is no life on Earth. Water sustains our daily lives, however its distribution and accessibility is not equal around the world. It is therefore our responsibility as human beings to ensure that water is made accessible to everyone, in sufficient quantity and quality, today and tomorrow.

ONE DROP —inspired by the creativity of Cirque du Soleil and its longstanding commitment to community involvement—uses circus, visual and multimedia arts along with folklore, popular theatre, music and dance to encourage change in communities.

ONE DROP™ focuses its efforts on two spectrums:

1. Developing countries facing urgent water access problems;
2. Developed countries that have the means to share the wealth, where per-capita water consumption is very high.

Although, have you ever thought of unifying them into one room, and reuniting them while using the artistic talent to gain a measureable exposure to the community?

That’s exactly what this week’s organization A1C Gallery from St. John’s, NL, has done, the non-profit, artist-run centre has taken it upon themselves to make sure that everyone has an equal opportunity in development through the community.

Responding to one of Canada’s most artistic postal codes, A1C Gallery opened its doors in June 2008. Located at 8 Baird’s Cove in historic downtown St. John’s, A1C is a non-profit, artist-run centre. Our programming usually includes emerging, mid-career and established artists. We are particularly interested in the promotion of emerging contemporary visual artists. At A1C, we provide resources, services and a supportive, meaningful context for artistic activity through information sharing, workshops, skills development and a sense of community.

Based out of Thornhill, this local not for profit organization focuses mainly on the education on a global scale.  With ongoing research and methods, they are working closely on the establishment of education standards. 

WORLDREACH FOUNDATION  is a charitable organization based in Canada and Nicaragua. Our mandate is to advance education on a global scale utilizing innovative mediums. We conduct ongoing research into pedagogical methods regarding the arts and new technologies. Our efforts lead to the creation of relevant international initiatives.

Unfortunately, some families do not have the financial means to send their children to a wealthy school, professional health care clinics, and often times suffer the consequence of equal opportunity. As stated by CDF “We must demand that our leaders commit to ensuring quality education for all children.”

The Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) is a non-profit child advocacy organization that has worked relentlessly for 35 years to ensure a level playing field for all children. We champion policies and programs that lift children out of poverty; protect them from abuse and neglect; and ensure their access to health care, quality education and a moral and spiritual foundation. Supported by foundation and corporate grants and individual donations, CDF advocates nationwide on behalf of children to ensure children are always a priority.

After wandering the grounds, and finding a cupcake carrier (which i did infact purchase), we wandered upstairs to a fun filled adventure awaiting ahead of us. Off into the right hand corner was a little section of PINE PROJECT featuring t-shirts.

I proceeded to look through their merchandise, and picked up a business card to further look into them. I was blown away by the website, and what I had discovered. So, there you have it! Of the 774 million illiterate adults worldwide, two-thirds are women.

Since 1956, International Reading Association (IRA) has been a nonprofit, global network of individuals and institutions committed to worldwide literacy.  More than 70,000 members strong, the Association supports literacy professionals through a wide range of resources, advocacy efforts, volunteerism, and professional development activities.  Our members promote high levels of literacy for all by:

• Disseminating research and information about reading
• Encouraging the lifetime reading habit

This week, our not-for-profit organization comes to us for their efforts in defense of earth rights.  Through documentation, organization, teaching, and various other methods, they expose and publicize earth rights abuses through campaigns, reports and articles.

Ka Hsaw Wa, Co-Founder and Executive Director, is a member of the Karen ethnic nationality of Burma. He was one of the student leaders in the 1988 nation-wide student uprising for democracy and freedom, and has been a human rights activist since he fled Burma in 1988. As well as managing and directing the overall operations of EarthRights International, Ka Hsaw Wa coordinates a grassroots field staff that has successfully documented human rights and environmental abuses within Burma.
