Young Artists For Haiti (K’naan – Wavin Flag Haiti Re-release)

With the devastation in Haiti still making it to the news headline to this day and aid in desperate need, there has been another collaboration of artists to release a song for relief efforts.

Toronto native K’naan has released a new version of Wavin’ Flag, which includes new lyrics specific to Haiti and is produced by the legendary Bob Ezrin, and is available where music is sold digitally at 12:01 a.m. ET on March 12. All proceeds will go to Free The Children, War Child Canada and World Vision.

While on tour in Eurpoe K’naan was quoted to say the following: “My song Wavin’ Flag seemed like the right feeling for what was going on in Haiti,”. The new version of Wavin’ Flag stays true to the original — hopeful, epic, with a catchy, uplifting chorus that almost forces you to sing along while giving you chills.

INTERVIEW: Everyone’s Talking

I sat down and had a chance to interview one of this month’s feature artist, Piano-Rock band Everyone’s Talking. Their new album came out recently which was produced by one and only David Bottrill (Moneen, Coheed And Cambria, Circa Survive) I caught up with them and asked them about a few things including their experience in working with David Bottrill.

Check out what they had to say about the experience and so much more.

1. For those who might not know who you are, can you introduce yourself and your band?

(Dani) – I play keys, write and sing. Our band Everyone’s Talking is awesome and is a blend of warm pop tunes and gritty prog. We call it Piano-Rock.

(Evan) – I sing, play guitar, and write. Everyone’s Talking was started by Dani and myself and we’ve been writing together for the last few years. In the live setting as a band, we like to extend our genre of piano-rock into jam band territory by expanding on our musical ideas. I think it’s a great way to keep things fresh for us and keep audiences engaged.

2. You guys recently released DRAGONFLIES which was produced by David Bottrill (Moneen, Coheed And Cambria, Circa Survive). How was that experience for you guys?

(D) – David Bottrill is a fantastic engineer and a fascinating man who has worked with some amazing artists. However, the recording of the album wasn’t the best experience. It was quite stressful because we had two weeks to handle everything. I guess that’s what happens when you try to get your album produced by him while staying independent. Nevertheless, we are quite happy with the result. Hopefully next time we’ll have about half-a-year to record, mix, and master our album.

3. The album came out online and is based off of “Pay what you want” download, where did that idea come from?

(D) – Our main inspiration for this method came from Radiohead of course, and their game-changing In Rainbows release. I think they set an example for everyone that music does not have a set price tag, and that bands can get paid by the support of their fans. Plus, I think that for an independent band, this is the best way to go. Give people the opportunity to check out the band’s debut album for whatever they think is fair.

(E) – Amongst ourselves and our peer group I’ve noticed the decline in physical CD sales. It would be naive of us to think that we would be 1 of 3 CD purchases they make this year, and that’s if they make any. So it was our goal to make our record as accessible as possible. It’s not a be all end all solution but for now it’s a step in the right direction.

4. Has the album (Dragonflies) been well received thus far? Where can we download Dragonflies?

(E) – The songs have been received well. It’s a very diverse mix of tracks and everyone seems to have a different favorite. I’m still digesting all the reactions. I hear it’s good from people all the time but the goal isn’t to be good. Great art receives polarized reactions.

(D) – It was great to hear fans feedback from all over the globe. This is another advantage to the ‘Pay What You Want’ method. We had responses from places other than Canada, like Mexico, UK, Russia, Israel and more. Anyone could download the album on www.everyonestalking.net or on our myspace page.

5. Now that the album is out and circulating, what’s the next step for Everyone’s Talking?

(D) – The next step is more like a few dozen steps. Our main goal is to complete our full band lineup by getting a permanent drummer and bassist on board for the live show. Among other things, we have a load of new songs to record, videos and video-blogs to film, plus we hope to get on a tour.

6. Where can we check out a Everyone’s Talking show? Any shows coming up you would like to advertise for?

(E) – We’re constantly announcing shows on our Facebook and Myspace pages. Join them and keep checking back for updates. We always like to hear from fans on those pages, feel free to send us messages, it helps us know where to point our efforts.

7. Do you guys think the music industry is getting involved enough with not-for-profit organizations?

(E) – Musicians play a huge role in helping raise awareness and funds for not-for-profit organizations because music is the most powerful way to bring people together around a cause. All the acts that I look up to are involved with not-for-profit organization in one way or another.

Talking in general, let’s not forget that the music industry is a very image driven business and as long as working with not-for-profits is seen as a positive then we’re only going to see more involvement from the music industry.

8. Do you guys currently work closely or collaborate with any not-for-profit organizations?

(E) – Last month after the disaster in Haiti we announced that all profits from album sales in that week will be donated to Doctors Without Boarders. As well I cut my long hair recently an donated it to get turned into wigs for cancer patients. It’s a start but I hope to do more over the next few years.

9. It’s no secret that the Toronto Music Scene is slowly disappearing with the closure of massive venues, where do you think it will be within the next few years?

(E) – As one venue closes another one opens. Toronto is a vibrant multi-cultural city and music will always be a huge part of it but because of its diversity as a city we’re supporting many musical niches. The rock show is no longer the hottest ticket in town but neither is any other ticket.

(D) – Toronto has some great bands and although the scene here is rather limited, I believe the music will find its way. I can’t wait to visit other cities and explore music scenes all over the world.

VANCOUVER 2010: Justin Bieber, Pink, Miley Cyrus, Mary J. Blige, Akon perform “We Are The World” in Vancouver for Haiti relief

The opening ceremonies for the 2010 winter olympics are promising to show a unforgettable performance with some of the biggest names in the industry performing a 1985 hit written by the belated Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. And it will appear for the first time at the Olympic opening ceremony on Friday February 12th 2010.

The original 1985 version of “We Are The World,” written by belated Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, was to help the starving people of Afric. It has been turned over and passed down to a new generation of artists who want to help raise money and awareness for the aftermath of the 7.0 magniture earthquake which recently took Haiti by surprise. Why is the song being remade by these new artists? Richie says its because it takes singers from 2010 to be relevant to the people of 2010, keeping it up to date while passing it through the generations.

You can expect to see a variety of artists covering a variety of genres such as: Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, Wyclef Jean, Miley Cyrus, Drake, T-Pain, Kanye West and Keri Hilson, together with seasoned artists like Tony Bennett and Barbra Streisand.

It’s been said that the artists will sing as pictures relevant to the Haiti disaster are shown in the background on a video background. Some solo recordings during the event will feature: Justin Bieber, Pink, Josh Groban, Mary J. Blige, Akon and Maroon 5′s Adam Levine.

Alexisonfire has joined the list of bands who will be helping haiti through these rough times through donations. Alexisonfire will be donating all of their January online store sales proceeds to the Red Cross to support the relief efforts in Haiti. Guitarist of Alxisonfire Wade MacNeil has made a plea to fans and can be seen below.

In light of the recent tragedy in Haiti we have been thinking about how to help. In a disaster of this magnitude the easiest way for everyone to get involved is simply by donating money. This will get clean water, sanitation and medical supplies, food and temporary shelter to the people who need it the most in Jacmel and Port-au-Prince. We will be donating all the proceeds from our online store for the month of January to the relief effort. So, if you’ve been thinking about getting a shirt recently, now is the time to do it!
